A prenuptial, postnuptial or cohabitation agreement pre-determines how separating parties distribute their property and incomes at the end of a relationship through separation or divorce. Although no one anticipates a separation or divorce on entering a relationship, it is a wise investment to ensure that a plan is created in the event that a separation occurs. These agreements are particularly necessary in second marriages/relationships and blended-family situations, where obligations imposed by the law may not be well known at the outset of a relationship.
